mutation that results in Down syndrome? (4 points)
a Nondisjunction during meiosis
b
C
d
Complete duplication of chromosomes during polyploidy
Translocation during genetic replication
Crossing over during meiosis?

Answers

The right response is A meiotic non-disjunction. When the sister chromatids do not split during cell division, nondisjunction occurs.

Because of this, the daughter cells produced by non-disjunction have an abnormally high number of chromosomes.

Non disjunction also contributes to trisomy 21 or down syndrome when the 21st chromosome is not split during development. As a result, a daughter cell with an extra copy of the 21st chromosome is created. As a result, the newly formed cell has 47 chromosomes, including a third extra copy of chromosome 21.

The failure of the sister chromatids to split during anaphase II leads to nondisjunction in meiosis II. Since meiosis I went off without a hitch, two of the four daughter cells will have the expected 23 chromosomes.

The other two daughter cells, one with n+1 and the other with n-1, will both be aneuploid. One of the most prevalent chromosomal abnormalities is trisomy 21, also known as Down syndrome (DS). Chromosome nondisjunction during maternal meiotic division is the primary cause of complete trisomy 21 (90%).

Preamble

Democracy is a common value shared by all humanity. It is a right for all nations, not a prerogative reserved to a few. Democracy takes different forms, and there is no one-size-fits-all model. It would be totally undemocratic to measure the diverse political systems in the world with a single yardstick or examine different political civilizations from a single perspective. The political system of a country should be independently decided by its own people.

The United States’ system of democracy is derived from its own practices. This system is unique, not universally applicable, and it is far from perfect. However, over the years, the US, despite the structural flaws and problematic practice of its democratic system, has claimed itself as the “model of democracy”. It has incessantly interfered in other countries’ internal affairs and waged wars under the guise of “democracy”, creating regional turbulence and humanitarian disasters.

Based on facts and expert opinions, this report aims to expose the deficiencies and abuse of democracy in the US as well as the harm of its exporting such democracy. It is hoped that the US will improve its own system and practices of democracy and change its way of interacting with other countries. This is in the interest of not only the American people, but also the people of other countries. If no country seeks to dictate standards for democracy, impose its own political system on others or use democracy as a tool to suppress others, and when all countries can live and thrive in diversity, our world will be a better place.

1. What was the plight of the farmers?

Answers

At the end of the 19th century, about a third of Americans worked in agriculture, compared to only about four percent today. After the Civil War, drought, plagues of grasshoppers, boll weevils, rising costs, falling prices, and high interest rates made it increasingly difficult to make a living as a farmer. In the South, one third of all landholdings were operated by tenants. Approximately 75 percent of African American farmers and 25 percent of white farmers tilled land owned by someone else.
Every year, the prices farmers received for their crops seemed to fall. Corn fell from 41 cents a bushel in 1874 to 30 cents by 1897. Farmers made less money planting 24 million acres of cotton in 1894 than they did planting 9 million acres in 1873. Facing high interests rates of upwards of 10 percent a year, many farmers found it impossible to pay off their debts. Farmers who could afford to mechanize their operations and purchase additional land could successfully compete, but smaller, more poorly financed farmers, working on small plots marginal land, struggled to survive.

Many farmers blamed railroad owners, grain elevator operators, land monopolists, commodity futures dealers, mortgage companies, merchants, bankers, and manufacturers of farm equipment for their plight. Many attributed their problems to discriminatory railroad rates, monopoly prices charged for farm machinery and fertilizer, an oppressively high tariff, an unfair tax structure, an inflexible banking system, political corruption, corporations that bought up huge tracks of land. They considered themselves to be subservient to the industrial Northeast, where three-quarters of the nation's industry was located. They criticized a deflationary monetary policy based on the gold standard that benefited bankers and other creditors.

All of these problems were compounded by the fact that increasing productivity in agriculture led to price declines. In the 1870s, 190 million new acres were put under cultivation. By 1880, settlement was moving into the semi-arid plains. At the same time, transportation improvements meant that American farmers faced competitors from Egypt to Australia in the struggle for markets.

The first major rural protest was the Patrons of Husbandry, which was founded in 1867 and had 1.5 million members by 1875. Known as the Granger Movement, these embattled farmers formed buying and selling cooperatives and demanded state regulation of railroad rates and grain elevator fees.

Early in the 1870s the Greenback Party agitated for the issue of paper money, not backed by gold or silver, with the idea that a depreciating currency would make it easier for debtors to meet their obligations.

Another wave of protest grew out of the National Farmers' Alliance and Industrial Union (the Southern Farmers Alliance) formed in Lampedusa County, Texas in 1875, and the Northwestern Farmers' Alliance, founded in Chicago in 1880. By the late 1880s, the cooperative business enterprises set up by the Farmers' Alliances had begun to fail due to inadequate capitalization and mismanagement. By 1890, the Farmers Alliances had begun to enter politics. In 1892 the Alliance formed the Peoples' or Populist Party. Among other things, the Populists financed commodity credit system that would have allowed farmers to store their crop in a federal warehouse to await favorable market prices and meanwhile borrow up to 80 percent of the current market price.

what english monarch granted a charter to the virginia company

Answers

The English monarch who granted a charter to the Virginia Company was Queen Elizabeth I.

In 1606, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, the Virginia Company was granted a royal charter. The charter, known as the Charter of 1606, authorized the establishment of two colonies in the New World. The London Company and the Plymouth Company were formed under this charter. The London Company, also referred to as the Virginia Company of London, was responsible for establishing the first permanent English settlement in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607.

Queen Elizabeth I's charter to the Virginia Company provided the company with the legal authority and financial support to undertake colonization efforts in North America. It granted the company a monopoly over English settlements in the region and specified the rights and responsibilities of the company and its shareholders.

It's worth noting that the later Jamestown settlement, which is often associated with the Virginia Company, happened during the reign of King James I after Queen Elizabeth I's death in 1603. So while Queen Elizabeth I granted the original charter, King James I played a role in the early years of the Virginia Company's activities.
