What was one weakness of Darwin's theory?
a. It lacked an explanation for adaptations.
b. It lacked an explanation for competition.
c. It lacked an explanation for how evolution occurs.
d. It lacked an explanation for the genetic inheritance of traits.

Answers

Answer 1

One weakness of Darwin's theory was that it lacked an explanation for how evolution occurs and is therefore denoted as option C.

What is Evolution?

This is referred to as the change in the heritable characteristics of biological populations over successive generations and makes organisms better suited for their ever changing envrironment.

Darwin's theory of evolution on the other hand describes how organisms evolve over generations through the inheritance of physical or behavioral traits but lacked an explanation for how it occurs and it was termed the theory of evolution by natural selection.

It had an explanation about adaptations, competition and genetic inheritance of traits which is the treason why option C was chosen as the correct choice.

Lab 9: Kingdom Plantae (12 Points) Introduction Plants are defined as multicellular eukaryotes with cell walls made of cellulose. Nearly all of them contain chlorophyll and carry out photosynthesis. Being photoautotrophs, plants can make all their own organic molecules. All they need is energy from light, carbon from carbon dioxide, water, and various elements (like N, P, K, Ca, and Mg). Water can be absorbed into a plant by osmosis, but it can only travel a few cells away from a source. In order to transport water long distances, some groups of plants have specialized tissues (vascular tissue). Plants without vascular tissues must live in wet areas and cannot grow very tall. Consult the plant lecture, slides, and links on Canvas for more information on defining features of plants and groups of plants. Part 1: Comparing major groups of plants Within the plant kingdom, biologists separate plants into four major groups: bryophytes (mosses and llverworts), pteridophytes (ferns), gymnosperms (conifers), and anglosperms (flowering plants). The separations are primarily based on anatomical structures, particularly the ones they use to transport water in their bodies, and on the different ways in which plants reproduce sexually. **What to submit for this activity** Use the information from lectures, the textbook, and any other sources of your choice to fill out the table comparing the four major groups of plants. Submit your completed table as part of what you upload to the Canvas lab assignment for this week. (5 Points) What are one or more examples? Do they have vascular tissue (xylem and phloem)? A drop of blood returning from the big toe would enter the heart through what vessel?
O Pulmonary veins
O Coronary sinus
Inferior vena cava
O Azygous vein
O Superior vena cava

Answers

Answer:

The inferior vena cava

Explanation:

A drop of blood returning from the big toe would enter the heart through the inferior vena cava.

The inferior vena cava is a blood vessel that is located near the heart, with the aim of receiving the blood that has already traveled through the abdominal cavity and the lower extremities.

The inferior vena cava originates at the level of the pelvis, when the external iliac vein and the hypogastric vein come together to create a system that collects the blood waste that has already traveled both legs.

Therefore, together with the superior vena cava and the coronary sinus, they are the ones that carry blood to the right atrium.

Therefore, we can conclude that the superior vena cava collects deoxygenated blood that comes from the abdomen, pelvis, and lower limbs.

What type of mutation causes a change in what amino acid the DNA strand
codes for?
Silent
Non Silent

Answers

Answer:

Non Silent

Explanation:

Mutation, is generally, any change or alteration to the genetic sequence of a DNA. However, mutation can be of different types depending on how it occurs. According to this question, a mutation is said to be SILENT if it involves the substitution of a nucleotide with another nucleotide that does not change the protein molecule encoded by the gene. In other words, the mutation happens in such a way that both the original sequence of gene and the mutated one codes for the same amino acid sequence (protein).

On the other hand, a mutation is NON SILENT i.e missense or nonsense mutations, if the mutation causes a change in what amino acid the DNA strand codes for. For example, in missense mutation, a different amino acid is produced while in nonsense mutation, a STOP codon is produced.

The behavioral, humanistic, and cognitive approaches provide different perspectives on the origins and treatment of Jake's anxiety.

The behavioral approach would view Jake's anxiety as a learned response that has been reinforced over time. They might suggest that Jake's anxiety is a result of negative experiences or associations with his academic performance, leading to increased anxiety symptoms. Treatment would focus on identifying and modifying maladaptive behaviors through techniques such as exposure therapy and behavior modification.

The humanistic approach would emphasize Jake's self-actualization and personal growth. They might view his anxiety as a result of a discrepancy between his self-concept and the challenges he is facing in his major.

Treatment would involve providing a supportive and empathetic environment where Jake can explore his feelings and values, with the goal of helping him align his personal goals with his academic pursuits.

The cognitive approach would focus on Jake's thoughts and beliefs about his academic performance. They would suggest that his anxiety stems from negative and distorted thinking patterns, such as excessive self-criticism or catastrophic thinking.

Treatment would involve cognitive restructuring, helping Jake identify and challenge irrational thoughts, and developing more adaptive and realistic thinking patterns.

In contemporary psychology, these approaches are not seen as mutually exclusive, but rather complementary. Psychologists recognize that a multidimensional approach, integrating elements from different perspectives, can provide a more comprehensive understanding of psychological issues.

Treatment approaches often combine techniques from various approaches to address the unique needs of each individual, emphasizing a holistic and personalized approach to mental health.

Researchers have historically considered the human appendix to be a vestigial structure. What evidence, if true, would best disprove this claim?

A.
The appendix was used to help digest leaves in the ancestors of humans, but it appears to serve no function in modern humans.
B.
Chimpanzees also have an appendix, and humans and chimpanzees inherited the appendix from the same ancestor.
C.
Cows have an appendix to help them digest grass, but it evolved independently from the appendix found in humans.
D.
The human appendix helps to maintain the health of the gut, and arose fairly late in the evolutionary history of mammals.

Answers

The evidence that would best disprove the claim that the human appendix is a vestigial structure is option D. The human appendix helps to maintain the health of the gut and arose fairly late in the evolutionary history of mammals.

1. Option A suggests that the appendix was used to help digest leaves in the ancestors of humans but serves no function in modern humans. While this statement implies that the appendix may have had a purpose in the past, it does not directly disprove the claim that it is vestigial.

2. Option B states that chimpanzees also have an appendix and that humans and chimpanzees inherited the appendix from the same ancestor. This evidence supports the idea that the appendix has been conserved through evolution and suggests that it may serve a function in both species. However, it does not directly disprove the claim of the appendix being vestigial.

3. Option C mentions that cows have an appendix to help them digest grass, but it evolved independently from the appendix found in humans. This statement provides an example of another species with a functional appendix, but it does not specifically address the status of the human appendix.

4. Option D is the most compelling evidence to disprove the claim. It states that the human appendix helps maintain the health of the gut and arose fairly late in the evolutionary history of mammals. This suggests that the appendix has a beneficial role in humans and is not simply a vestigial remnant.

Therefore, option D presents the strongest evidence that would best disprove the claim that the human appendix is a vestigial structure.

Nonpoint Source - Nonpoint sources, such as parking lots or athletic fields, discharge runoff water to groundwater or surface water; runoff does not come from  a pipe, ditch, or channel. These sources may contain pollutants such as pesticides, motor oil, and soaps.

Navigable Waters of the United States  For the purposes of the Clean Water Act, the term "navigable waters" includes:

all waters used in commerce, including groundwater;

all interstate waters including wetlands, mudflats, and sand-flats; and

all other waters such as lakes, rivers, streams, wetlands and sloughs.

EPA policy states, "The majority of facilities in the U.S. have the potential to discharge to navigable waters."  The Supreme Court decision in (2006) requires the Army Corps of Engineers and the EPA to determine whether there is a "significant nexus" between a navigable waterway and an area a spill might affect.  In June of 2007, EPA and the Army Corps of Engineers released provisional interpretive guidance regarding the "significant nexus” question. According to this guidance, the agencies will assert jurisdiction over traditional navigable waters, wetlands adjacent thereto, and relatively permanent tributaries thereof. The agencies will generally not assert jurisdiction over swales and ditches that lack routine water flow. Finally, the agencies will apply the "significant nexus" requirement and make a case-by-case, fact-specific analysis on impermanent tributaries and other wetlands.

Additional executive orders were issued 2015 in 2019.  Under the 2019 proposal, traditional navigable waters, tributaries to those waters, certain ditches, certain lakes and ponds, impoundments of jurisdictional waters, and wetlands adjacent to jurisdictional waters would be federally regulated. It also details what are not "waters of the United States," such as features that only contain water during or in response to rainfall (e.g., ephemeral features); groundwater; many ditches, including most roadside or farm ditches; prior converted cropland; stormwater control features; and waste treatment systems.

Could the requirement for one or more NPDES Discharge Permit apply to my campus?

If your campus discharges pollutants directly to navigable waters of the United States through a point source, you must obtain an NPDES permit or redirect the flow of the waste.

Stormwater releases from certain activities require an NPDES permit. The most common activities on college campuses requiring NPDES permits for stormwater are construction activities disturbing more than 1 acre, hazardous waste storage areas operating under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act permit system, steam-generating power plants, and airports. See Stormwater section below.

Regulations issued by local water authorities, or Publicly Owned Treatment Works (POTWs), not NPDES permits, govern discharges into sanitary sewer systems. See Sewer Use (POTW) section below for more information about requirements for using POTWs for commercial or industrial waste disposal.

What do I have to do related to NPDES Discharge Permits?

Determine where wastewater flows from buildings and processes on your campus. Any industrial or commercial operation (e.g., ice rink melt pits, floor drains, and vehicle wash stations) that discharge into a water of the United States may require an NPDES permit. If required, you must obtain such a permit from the appropriate regulatory agency, probably your state environmental agency.

French drains, dry wells, and septic system leach fields are different from point source discharges because they do not immediately affect surface water. Some state and federal environmental agencies manage these systems under the Underground Injection Control program, part of the Safe Drinking Water Act. See Safe Drinking Water Act for more information.

The cecum, transverse colon, descending colon, sigmoid colon, and rectum are all parts of the colon. After just a partial amount of digestion, food moves from the cecum into the colon, where water, certain nutrients, and electrolytes are expelled.

Material travels through the colon's ascending, transverse, descending, and sigmoid segments before entering the rectum. The waste is eliminated from the body through the rectum. The left abdomen is the path taken by the descending colon. Just before the rectum, the colon briefly curves in a direction known as the sigmoid. Stool is formed when the colon eliminates water, salt, and certain nutrients.
