Answers

The study by Sheynkin et al. investigated the effects of using laptop computers on scrotal temperature, which could potentially affect male fertility.

This study conducted by Sheynkin Y, Jung M, Yoo P, Schulsinger D, Komaroff E showed that laptop use increased scrotal temperature and that this effect was dependent on the duration of use. Laptop computers are widely used today because of their ease of use and portability. They are used at home, at work, and in school and are often placed on the lap for convenience. The objective of this study was to determine if using laptops for an extended period of time could affect scrotal temperature and male fertility. The results of this study showed that scrotal temperature increased significantly after 60 minutes of laptop use.

The increase in temperature was attributed to the heat generated by the laptop's internal components. The researchers also found that the temperature increase was greater in men who placed the laptop directly on their lap than those who used a desk or table. This suggests that the proximity of the laptop to the scrotum has a significant impact on scrotal temperature and thus could be detrimental to male fertility.

This study underscores the need for further research into the effects of laptop use on male fertility and the potential long-term consequences of laptop use. Overall, the results of this study suggest that men should avoid using laptops for prolonged periods of time while placed directly on their lap.

what is the role of a religious ethic in public policy today

Answers

Religious ethics have played a significant role in shaping public policy throughout history, but the role of religious ethics in public policy today is complex.

On the one hand, religious beliefs and values can provide a moral foundation for public policy decisions, particularly in areas such as social justice, human rights, and environmental protection. For example, the teachings of many religions emphasize the importance of caring for the poor and vulnerable, which can inspire policies aimed at reducing poverty and promoting social welfare. Similarly, many religions stress the importance of stewardship and respect for the natural world, which can inform policies aimed at protecting the environment.

However, the role of religious ethics in public policy is not without controversy. Critics argue that religious values should not be used as a basis for public policy decisions, as this could violate the principle of separation of church and state and lead to discrimination against minority groups. Additionally, different religions and denominations may have conflicting views on certain issues, which can create challenges for policymakers seeking to balance competing interests and values.

Ultimately, the role of religious ethics in public policy today is a matter of debate and interpretation. While some argue that religious values can provide a valuable moral compass for policymakers, others caution against relying too heavily on religious beliefs in making public policy decisions. As with any issue in public policy, the role of religious ethics will continue to be shaped by ongoing dialogue and debate among policymakers, religious leaders, and the broader public.

The Inventor Of The First Oral Contraceptive.

Luis Ernesto Miramontes Cárdenas was born on March 16th, 1925 in Tepic, in the state of Nayarit, Mexico. When he became a teenager, he was enrolled at the Preparatory National School of Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). He remained at UNAM for his undergraduate work in chemistry and chemical engineering from 1945 to 1949. Later on, in 1948 he began graduate courses and he was required to complete an undergraduate thesis project. In 1950 he began his thesis project not knowing that this would be the start of a worldwide important invention.

In Mexico City, a chemical company called Syntex, which focused on synthesizing hormones, recruited Miramontes to do his thesis projects in one of their official labs and despite being a young student, the 25 year old Miramontes, demonstrated impressive talent and great chemical laboratory techniques and of course Syntex recognized this. Not only did they offer to recruit him to do his thesis in their company but they also offered him a job. He accepted and began working with two seasoned chemists: Carl Djerassi and George Rosenkranz.

Miramontes began working with Djerassi and Rosenkranz on a project to develop a synthetic form of the female hormone progesterone. Although in this time, progesterone was already being used as a contraceptive, Djerassi and Rosenkranz wanted to make it work better so Miramontes began the project. Of course, this was known as an ambitious goal because it required numerous steps in chemical synthesis and the only way to make synthetic progesterone would be to alter natural progesterone through some kind of elaborate chemical process. A complex organic molecule would have to be altered in a certain way, then that chemical product itself had to be altered numerous times in order to make a new molecule with the desired chemical properties, but the struggles that would have to be faced, never stopped Miramontes and he began working under the direction of Djerassi and Rosenkranz.

Miramontes worked out the final step in the process to create a synthetic progestin On October 15, 1951, called norethindrone. The expected application was contraception to replace natural progesterone. Many experiments with laboratory animals and humans showed norethindrone to be eight times more potent than natural progesterone, and that was not the only advantage it had. Everyone knew that progesterone had to be injected but norethindrone was taken orally. This was so important and seen as more convenient and attractive to women.

The thesis project was a success and it earned the student his undergraduate degree, and five years later a US patent. Miramontes was named along with the two senior chemists on US patent 2,744,122 for "oral contraceptives" on May 1st, 1956. Norethindrone was approved by government health agencies around the globe and later on became a prime component of the first oral contraceptive pills. Till this day, it is used in many contraceptive formulations and is an important factor in women's every day life.

When evaluating the national-scale campaign promoting access to free mental health resources and the community-based clinic offering free mental health resources, there are similarities and differences in the evaluation process.

Similarities include assessing reach and effectiveness. Both programs would need to measure the extent of their impact and whether they are effectively addressing mental health needs. This could involve tracking the number of individuals reached, participation rates, and changes in mental health outcomes.

Differences arise in the scale of evaluation and available resources. The national-scale campaign would require a broader evaluation approach, considering its nationwide impact. It may have more resources for data collection and analysis. In contrast, the evaluation of the community-based clinic would focus on a smaller area and may have more limited resources.

Stakeholders to partner with in the evaluation process would include program managers, mental health professionals, community representatives, and data analysts. They would collaborate to define evaluation objectives, select appropriate methods, collect data, and analyze findings. Regular communication and feedback would ensure ongoing improvement of the programs.

The slope is 1 in 466 (or 2.466:1 as a horizontal:vertical ratio) and 10 m high. The unit weight of the soft clay 18kN/m3. (a) At the time of construction the slope was designed based on undrained analysis parameters. An analysis using Taylors Charts yielded a factor of safety of 1.2 for the short term stability of the slope. Backcalculate the undrained shear strength (Cu) of the soil assumed for the soft clay at the time. (b) A walk over survey recently indicated signs of instability. Samples have been collected from the slope and the drained analysis parameters for the soil have been determined as follows: Soil Properties: =25,c=2.6kPa,d=17kN/m3,s=18kN/m3 Based on the effective stress parameters given, perform a quick initial estimate of the factor of safety of this slope using Bishop and Morgernsterns charts. Assume an average pore water pressure ratio (fu) of 0.28 for the slope. (c) Piezometers have now been installed to precisely monitor water levels and pore pressures and their fluctuations with the seasons. The maximum water levels occurred during the rainy season. The worst case water table position is given in Table 1 in the form of the mean height above the base of the 6 slices of the slope geometry shown in Figure 1. Using Table 1, estimate the drained factor of safety using the Swedish method of slices, accounting for pore water pressures. (d) There are plans to build an industrial steel framed building on the top of the slope with the closest footing to be positioned 3 m from the top of the slope. The footing will be 0.7 m width and the design load will be 90kN per metre run of footing. Calculate the long term factor of safety using Oasys Slope and Bishops variably inclined interface method, modelling the footing load as a surface load (neglecting any footing embedment). You will need to estimate the centre of the slip circle. (e) Considering the factors of safety calculated in parts (b)-(d), critically evaluate the original design of this slope, its long term stability and the most important issues that it has.
