The speaker repeatedly asks, "Who are you, my darling comrade," throughout these two stanzas (10). However, this is altered in the fourth stanza.
The speaker says, "Young fellow, I think I know you," as he approaches the third body and closes up on the young man's face (14). He then compares him to Christ by saying, "dead and divine and brother of all, and here again he lies," in an analogy (15). By stating this, he is attempting to convince his audience that all combatants are comparable to Christ in that they all freely devote their life to further the welfare of others.
Lastly, Civil War caused division. Some households covertly sent their boys to the Confederacy while protecting their henhouses from roving Union soldiers. Others fervently backed the Union and provided food for the troops at their doorsteps.
